Do you have trouble falling asleep? In a world filled with electronics and lots of things that keep our minds distracted and busy, it can be quite a challenge to fall asleep. Sometimes counting sheep just doesn’t work! As a Sleep Nation Ambassador, I learned that even though 62% of Americans regularly suffer from symptoms of insomnia, only 20% believe they have the condition and 12% have been diagnosed by a doctor. That is a pretty high number of people who don’t even realize they suffer from insomnia!

In a previous post, I talked about the huge sleep problem many of us suffer from in the U.S. With nearly 4 million Americans suffering from insomnia, the problem of insomnia is huge and definitely needs to be talked about. If you are one who believes you have difficulty with insomnia, don’t fear. Here are 4 Tips That Will Help You Get Some Shut-Eye:

1 – Get Active Early – Getting a good night’s sleep doesn’t only start when the sun goes down. Exercising early in the day can help a lot, as it strengthens your circadian rhythm, which then helps bring sleepiness about at night.

2 – Get Comfortable – When it’s time to go to sleep, you need to remind your body that it’s time to wind down. Relaxing activities, such as taking a warm bath or listening to relaxing music, can help you to transition from daytime to bedtime.

3 – Sign Off – This is a really important one, especially with as much as we use the internet and technology during the day! Be sure to put away your electronic devices one hour before you head to bed. LED lights from mobile phones and tablets can activate the brain, which plays a big role in keeping you from falling and staying asleep at night.

4 – Go Dark – Block out the light. It’s amazing what a difference this actually makes! Light and darkness are natural reminders that tell our bodies when it’s time to rest. Light during the night can send messages to your brain telling you to “wake up!” when you should actually be resting.

Knowing how important it is to get a full, uninterrupted night’s sleep and that there are many benefits that help us on a daily basis, I will be implementing some of these Shut-Eye Strategies in my life so that I can get a good night’s sleep. I will be signing off from social media at least one hour before going to bed. What will you implement into your life?
